Waves secure 11 medals at Bracknell and Wokingham SC Masters Meet
In March 2024, 8 Waves masters swimmers travelled to Bracknell Leisure Centre for their 28th Masters Open Meet. The meet featured 38 clubs from across the region.
The stand-out performer was Megan Fenwick who secured a hat-trick of gold medals in the 18-24 years age group. Medals were also collected by Alistair Garmendia (a gold, silver and bronze in the 40-44 years age group), Kelly Thomas (two silver and one bronze in the 35-39 years age group) and Ian Feltham (one silver and one bronze, also in the 35-39 years age group).
Alex Sheen, who was making his individual debut, was just outside the medals, achieving three top 5 places across impressive swims.
The meet featured both traditional and some slightly more unusual relay events. Iveta Burian, Amna Salih and Emma Lindell joined forces with Kelly and Megan across the 4x50m medley and freestyle relays, securing 5th place in each.
This was followed up by a mixed 4x50m butterfly relay in honour of a former Bracknell swimmer. The Waves entry was named “Fens Fairies” after of our head coach, finishing closely behind Bracknell’s “Last minute changes”, but ahead of the “Chiswick Hoo Hahs” from Chiswick Masters.
The meet rounded off with a six-person tandem relay. The event involved one member of the team dropping out after each 50m had been completed (i.e. at 50m, 100m, etc.,), with the final member of the team swimming 300m! This was not something that the Waves had ever been involved in before but was fun to be part of and the team finished a respectable 4th out of 15 teams that swam the event.
The Waves placed 16th out of 38 clubs overall, and next up are the Hampshire Masters Championships in May/June!
