Ironman Women’s World Championships 23 Kona Hawaii
Following on from securing qualification at the Bolton Ironman event in July, Penny Thomas headed to Hawaii in October for the Ironman Women’s World Championships.

Penny said "Going to where Ironman began was special. Race day was hot with highs of 30 degrees but the name of the game was ‘holomua’ – to keep moving forward. The 2.4 mile sea swim with 2000 women was one of the prettiest I’ve done with fish swimming underneath. I got out the water in 1:30hr.

Out of transition on the bike is where my foot was beginning to hurt. I began to cycle for the 112 miles round and back to Hawi along the Queen K. My foot pain was progressively getting worse.

At the end of the cycle I was unsure I could run but I decided to start the 26.2 mile course. The last 20 miles I was no longer able to run with my foot. I had strained the two main tendons in my foot and got tendinitis, but finished in the 15 hour mark.

The support from the club pre- and post-race has been amazing. I wouldn’t have been able to complete this event without them, especially Head Coach Glenn Fenwick.”
